10 Natasha Romanoff Was Going To Be Resurrected In Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff lost her life during Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing herself for the Soul Stone, but this didn’t stop her first solo MCU project from releasing as part of the MCU’s Phase 4. 2021’s Black Widow told the retroactive story of Romanoff’s time between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but some theorized that the project would introduce a way for Black Widow to be resurrected in the MCU’s future. Many criticized Marvel Studios for killing Romanoff off and not giving her death a great deal of attention, so this would have been a quick fix, but unfortunately, it didn’t come to pass.

9 Eternals Would Have Revealed The Origin Of The MCU’s Mutants

In Marvel Comics, the Eternals and mutants are intrinsically linked, as both were created by Celestial experiments on Earth millions of years ago. This led to the rumor that Phase 4’s Eternals would help to establish mutants as a species in the MCU, as well as debuting the cosmic, god-like heroes to the franchise. However, Marvel Studios significantly changed the Eternals’ backstory in the MCU, no longer featuring them as the product of Celestial experiments on Earth, but making them synthetic beings created by the Celestials in space. This severed their connection to mutants, which nullified this popular fan theory and left the mutants’ MCU history unclear.

In the MCU’s Phase 4, Thor became the first original Avenger to receive a fourth solo film with 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The continuation of Chris Hemsworth’s depiction of Thor in Phase 4 was expected by many to be the end of the Asgardian God of Thunder’s story, as some theorized that he could pass the baton onto a new Thor-related hero: Beta Ray Bill. In Marvel Comics, Beta Ray Bill has the power to wield both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, with the latter originally being his own weapon. A statue of Beta Ray Bill can be glimpsed in Thor: Ragnarok, reinforcing this rumor, but Beta Ray Bill wasn’t introduced.

7 Mephisto Was Behind The Events Of WandaVision

Mephisto has been rumored to appear in several projects in the MCU’s Phases 4 and 5, dating back to the Multiverse Saga’s first project, WandaVision. As Marvel Comics’ depiction of the demon Mephistopheles, Mephisto’s connection to the Scarlet Witch in the comics led to some convincing theories that he could have been behind the Westview Hex, Vision’s revival, and the creation of Wanda’s children, Billy and Tommy. Despite these popular rumors, Mephisto didn’t appear in WandaVision, but there is recent speculation that Mephisto could appear in the MCU’s Phase 5 projects Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Ironheart, though this hasn’t yet been confirmed by Marvel Studios.

In Marvel Comics, the team comprises Mister Fantastic, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Professor X, Namor, and Black Bolt, yet the MCU’s roster was different. One major theory posed that Tom Cruise could appear as a variant of Iron Man in Multiverse of Madness, as the actor had previously been offered the role of Tony Stark for 2008’s Iron Man. As it turns out, there had been no plans to feature Tom Cruise in Multiverse of Madness.

Rumors involving Adam Driver, Penn Badgley, and Matt Smith have been popular, while some suspected Reed Richards could debut in Phase 5’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The idea that the Fantastic Four could have been trapped in the Quantum Realm had been popular. Many thought that The Good Place’s William Jackson Harper’s casting hinted at him playing Richards, but this wasn’t the case at all, as he instead portrayed the telepath Quaz.

4 Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Was Going To End In Tragedy

Prior to the Phase 5 release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, director James Gunn and the whole cast had revealed that the film would be the final adventure for the original team. This led to widespread speculation that at least one (but probably more) Guardians members would love their lives in the 2023 film, with popular theories placing Drax the Destroyer, Star-Lord, and Rocket as candidates to pay the ultimate price. Throughout the film, it seemed as though any Guardian of the Galaxy could have met their demise, but not a single member of the team died during Vol. 3, with everyone in fact receiving a happy ending.

Secret Invasion was met with a great deal of criticism in the MCU’s Phase 5 for not delivering as effective a story as it could have done, but a portion of the series’ issues could be attributed to fans’ incredibly high expectations. Perhaps no other project was surrounded with so many theories, rumors, and speculative ideas, meaning it was difficult for Marvel Studios to match expectations. One popular theory suggested that Secret Invasion might have finally been the series to explore life during Avengers: Endgame’s five-year Blip, a major period of history that hasn’t really been investigated. The Blip was mentioned many times in Secret Invasion, but never actually seen.

With the Fantastic Four being confirmed to be coming to the MCU back at SDCC 2019, many thought that the team’s most iconic villain, Doctor Doom, wouldn’t be far behind. Speculation saw Victor Von Doom debut in several Multiverse Saga projects, including Moon Knight, Ironheart, and Armor Wars, but the most popular theory placed Doctor Doom in Phase 4’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Doom was expected to appear in Wakanda Forever’s supposedly-cut post-credits scene, apparently setting up another fictional location, his Kingdom of Latveria, but this turned out to be yet another completely false Marvel Cinematic Universe rumor.
