Pedri to start after three months

Heading into this game, everything suggests that Barcelona are expected to hand Pedri a start against Alaves this evening.

According to Diario SPORT, Xavi Hernandez is expected to make a few changes to the starting eleven, one of which could see Pedri operating alongside Ilkay Gundogan in midfield.

If the Spaniard does indeed start against Alaves, it will be his first start in three months.

Pedri did mark his return last weekend by appearing as a substitute against Real Sociedad. The Spanish international was a part of the team against Shakhtar as well, but he only played for 31 minutes, as a substitute.

The Alaves game, therefore, could be the first time he starts a match since Cadiz, way back in August.

How Pedri’s return can boost Barça

As per the report, Pedri is likely to operate as an interior midfielder alongside Gundogan, with Oriol Romeu acting as the number six.

Pedri’s ability to create chances, coupled with his utility in the second line of press could add more substance to Barcelona’s game during the possession phase.

Not to mention, with Gavi ruled out due to suspension, Pedri’s presence will be even more critical, especially when it comes to feeding the attackers with clever passes into the final third.
