Side hustle: How owning a pool, tennis court or backyard in SA could earn you thousands this Summer – Beragampengetahuan

Your backyard could earn you a $5000 income this summer and you barely have to lift a finger. Picture: supplied.

A Prospect homeowner is among those comfortably riding the sharing economy wave, renting out her pool by the hour in a move that’s not just driven by monetary gain.

Aamna Tunio is just one South Australian who has put their pool up for rent on sharing platform Swimply – an Airbnb style system for the backyard that allows users to rent out their pool, tennis, pickleball or basketball court.

In SA, current hire costs range between $30 and $50 an hour, meaning pool owners stand to make well over $5000 a year if they lease out their asset for as little as two hours a week.

Ms Tunio, who joined Swimply just over a month ago, said she made $300 from just seven bookings.

However, she said it was the people she’s helped along the way that made the venture truly worthwhile.

“I grew up with a pool and having those memories made with my cousins, my family, that’s not something you get when you go to a public pool,” Ms Tunio said.

“I’m also a Muslim so I understand what it’s like for Muslim communities in Australia to go out in public pools where you have to cover your face or can’t show your face … so this gives them an opportunity to enjoy their time with family and not having to worry about covering themselves up.

“Recently, I also had a family reach out to me saying they had a special-needs child … asking `would it be okay hosting us?’

“I said definitely – that’s what I’m doing this for … to give back to the community.”

Ms Tunio, who is leasing out her pool for $35 per hour, said the initiative had helped pay for bills.

“It’s been an amazing passive income.”

Swimply Australia director Sam McDonagh said he anticipated pool hire to triple across Australia this summer.

“With the rising cost of living in Australia, it is natural that people will explore ways to generate additional income or offset their expenses,” Mr McDonagh said.

“Swimply offers a simple solution for pool and court owners across the country to do just this.

“However, we have also observed that some hosts join Swimply as a means of providing convenient and economical access to a pool for their local community.”

Sydney currently leads the national pool hire market with 228 listings on Swimply, followed by Brisbane with 98 pools for hire.

Rounding out the top five are Melbourne with 123 pools for hire, 46 in Perth, 8 in Adelaide and five in newcomer Hobart.
