Oscars 2024 – Celebrations and Snubs
Earlier this week the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year’s award nominations and, as expected, reactions were strong and social media almost immediately lit itself on fire. Today I want to break down for you some of the nominees and snubs that are currently driving the conversation.

Unsurprisingly, Oppenheimer is leading the pack with 13 nominations. It’s giving The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films circa 20 years ago. Slightly more surprising is Poor Things nipping at its heels with 11 nominations, giving to total awards won by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King exactly 20 years ago at the 2004 Academy Awards ceremony.
The most culturally significant and historical nomination belongs to Lily Gladstone for her nomination as Best Actress in Killers of the Flower Moon. Should she win (and it seems an inevitability she will based on how other awards have gone this season so far), Gladstone is poised to become the first Native American performer to win in the category.
Barbie was the biggest snub and the injustice the movie-going public is currently up-in-arms about. America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling secured themselves nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. The film itself is also nominated for: Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Original Song (twice over, seeming to cement its triumph in this category), Costume Design, and Production Design, however Greta Gerwig was not nominated in the Director Category and Barbie, herself, Margot Robbie was not nominated in the Best Lead Actress category.
Whether or not you have seen or enjoyed Barbie, the irony of a film directly addressing the patriarchy led by women garnering its most high profile awards for their male co-star seems not only antithetical to the ethos of the film itself, but potentially serves as a reminder of who the Academy voters represent and their lapses in judgment of the past.
Another snub (in my opinion, it ought to have snagged a Best Picture nod), was Godzilla Minus One, but it did secure a Visual Effects nomination in a historic move for the beloved kaiju franchise. Japanese cinema is also being celebrated in the Best Animated Feature category with Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki snagging a nomination for The Boy and the Heron. Despite Disney’s Elemental also being nominated in the same category, to me, this category is a battle between The Boy and the Heron and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
I’m looking forward to reading your reactions in the comments section and on social media! A full list of nominees follows:
