Former AFL player Chris Tarrant and his interior designer wife Lauren have splashed almost $10m on two neighbouring Toorak houses.

The high-profile couple purchased the St Georges Rd homes in May but the sites’ new ownership details remained shrouded in mystery until recently becoming available on public records.

Playing for both Collingwood and Fremantle in his 260-match career, Tarrant retired from AFL in 2012.

He won a 2001 Anzac Day Medal, was an All-Australian selection in 2003 and was the Magpies’ leading goalkicker for five years running, including an equal placing with Anthony Rocca in 2002.

Ms Tarrant, a businesswoman who runs Lauren Tarrant Design, is known for her work on luxury homes including several multimillion-dollar Toorak pads.

The Tarrants purchased two three-bedroom houses, including a “circa-1930s solid brick Georgian residence”.

RT Edgar Toorak’s Antoinette Nido brokered the deal but declined to comment on the buyers or the price.

However, property records show one of the addresses fetched $6.352m and the other sold for $3.573m, totalling $9.925m altogether.

Ms Nido, who was named the Real Estate Institute Victoria 2023 residential salesperson of the year, said she sold the two homes through an expressions of interest campaign after they failed to attract a buyer when earlier listed with a different agency.

“It’s just an amazing opportunity, just under 1000sq m and you could build a fabulous trophy home on that site,” Ms Nido said.

Before a new home could be built, the existing two houses would likely have to be demolished and council approval would be required to construct an abode in their place.

“It’s a prized property, it is west-facing at the rear and has two crossovers in St Georges Rd, one of the most prestigious boulevards in Toorak,” Ms Nido said.

The two blocks had attracted interest from both local and Chinese-based buyers with the street serving as a major drawcard for rich-listers in Melbourne and further afield, she added.

“It is always popular, with high-end buyers looking at that rarefied location and they (listings) don’t come up very often,” Ms Nido said.

The Tarrants put their four-storey house on Grange Rd, Toorak, up for sale in May 2022 with $15m-$16.5m price hopes.

It was taken off the market after a month, with no subsequent signs of a sale.

That listing showed the property features a rooftop retreat with infinity pool, gas open fire and outdoor television plus a wine storage room, lift and five-car basement garage.
