Respected environmentalist Robert Purves has quietly sold his longtime home Kirkoswald House – one of Mosman’s most historically significant homes – for more than $17.5m over the Christmas break.

It was the fourth time he had listed the circa 1873 property on more than 2163sqm of level land and although agent Michael Coombs, of Atlas Lower North Shore, couldn’t comment, industry sources advised it traded for between $17.5m and $18m over the summer holiday.

Mr Purves is former president of WWF Australia, founding member of The Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, a director of Climate Council of Australia and director of Farmers for Climate Action.

He purchased the five-bedroom colonial estate 32 years ago for $1.855m.

The home has been on and off the market for around eight years.

Tucked behind high sandstone walls the house has a central courtyard with water feature and sculpture and has been described as a slice of the Southern Highlands in Balmoral just a short walk to Balmoral and Chinaman’s beaches.

Mr Purves first tried to sell in 2016 and 2018 with other agents, then he listed with Atlas in 2022 and again in October last year when it had a $19m price tag.

According to PropTrack, the median house price in Mosman is $5.194m. That’s up 7.6 per cent over the past 12 months.
