Palm Springs style renovation revives original mid-century home – Beragampengetahuan

28 Craigie Rd, Newtown, is on the market after Palm Springs-inspired renovation.

A classy Palm Springs-inspired renovation has revived a mid-century Newtown gem previously untouched since the 1960s.

Vendor April Hosking has spent more than two years painstakingly modernising the three-bedroom, double brick home just 150m from the Barwon River.

A trapdoor leading to a secret wine cellar, a built-in floating couch and ’60s phone seat are among quirky original features given a second life at 28 Craigie Rd, Newtown.

The kitchen/meals area has a view over towards Highton.

The original floating couch has been given a new lease on life.

Outside, a restored mid-century fireplace is the centrepiece of a new entertainment area, while a 6m-high palm tree expresses Ms Hosking’s love for Modernist desert landscapes.

She said much of the interior had fallen into disrepair when she purchased the classic mid-century home, built by a German engineer in the 1960s.

“I wanted to carefully modernise the original home taking inspiration from the Californian Palm Springs architecture, which the home perfectly lends itself to,” she said.

“The house wouldn’t be Palm Springs without the palms, but there’s also plenty of other in keeping features that have been added throughout the home including the white facade, ply ceiling, bright green door and raw materials.”

The rear garden was just a blank hill when the property last sold two years ago.

The east side Zen garden has carefully placed sandstone boulders.

Ms Hosking, the founder of 3D rendering business Reel View Designs, spent a year planning the renovation, working within the existing footprint to create more contemporary open-plan spaces.

The new kitchen, dining and living area takes in views across the Barwon River to Highton and flows out to a rooftop patio, while a second rear lounge links to the north-facing back yard.

Surprises lie around every corner, including downstairs where a wine cellar and moody cinema room are hidden out of sight.

Ms Hosking said restoring the original timber furniture was a labour of love that added to the authenticity of the renovation.

Timber from the original bed was upcycled in the main bedroom.

“A lot of the built-in furniture is still in its original position or has been moved, such as the TV unit that now stands proud in the downstairs cinema room,” she said.

“I also modernised the original bathroom basin with micro-cement topping, creating a unique, one-off design and designed the custom-made oak ensuite mirror to reflect the original.

“The master bedroom bedhead shelf and built-in side tables were made from upcycled materials from the original bed and kitchen panelling.”

Whitford, Newtown agent Peter Fort is handling the campaign for the 700sq m property, which is scheduled to be auctioned on December 9.

Prices hopes are from $1.45m to $1.55m.
