Housing goes green

There’s absolutely no doubt that eco-friendly features are the future trend.

beragampengetahuan.com.au’s 2022 Residential Consumer Omnibus Survey shows more consumers are drilling down on power-saving features in their homes with 55% of respondents listing energy efficiency as critical or essential – up 17% compared to 2021.

The study also found that, for high numbers of respondents, bill shock was a primary concern moving forward, showing its an issue here to stay, according to Anne Flaherty, REA Group economist.

“We know more people are paying attention and wanting sustainable features,” she says.

“We even know they’re willing to pay a premium for some features if they think it will help drive down the cost of their bills.”

It’s a trend not going unnoticed, with developers and home builders increasingly focusing on baseline sustainability.

There’s also the pressure from mandated efficiency minimums like the Federal Government requiring all new homes from 2013 to have a 6-star Nationwide House Energy Rating (NatHERS), transitioning to 7-star ratings in 2024.

Amid the growing pressure to go green, some leading brands are embracing the challenge.

“These are architecturally-designed homes, and when people see them, they’re really impressed,” Kearns says.

The facades still perfectly mimic the beautiful brick and rendered walls that home buyers love.

While inside, layouts are crafted to maximise natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. 

There are also eco-friendly bells and whistles like double glazing.

“Really, we can offer every single design we currently have under traditional construction methods,” Kearns says.

Kearns adds that buyers are already responding with high levels of enquiry for the new designs.
