The Block 2023 Episode 34 recap: Inside the most awkward winners’ dinner ever held – Beragampengetahuan

Scott Cam found himself the bemused guest of honour at one of the most awkward dinner parties of all time.

And it only proved to be the first of two painful celebratory meals this episode.

Eliza and Liberty haven’t uttered a word to Kristy and Brett since the couple accused them of getting special treatment.

That epic showdown ultimately fractured the friendship between bffs Leah and Kristy, when the former sniffed the wind and realised that she was on the wrong side of reality TV history by being Kristy’s wing woman.

Given the ongoing hostilities, it’s fair to say the sisters were dreading spending their winners’ night away with the couple.

“You just couldn’t have scripted it, could you? That both of us, who haven’t spoken for a week, and essentially don’t like each other, have to go away and have a nice intimate dinner together with Scotty,” Liberty laughed.

Kristy and Brett on the other hand were looking forward to it, which perplexed Eliza.

“They don’t care that they are making everyone uncomfortable. It’s weird sociopathic behaviour as far as I’m concerned,” Eliza said.

Love them or hate them, Kristy and Brett have certainly put on an impressive display of bravado. Despite being on the outer with every other team now, they have stuck to their guns and not shown any remorse for their actions.

Before sitting down to eat, both teams played a game of Jenga to secure a $1200 vase.

The sisters won and Brett wasn’t happy. Not because he thought it was a stunning piece.

“I just like to win,” he fumed. With the official game playing over for the night, it was time to move on to the psychological games, kicking off with almost entirely silent dinner.

“The vibe with Kristy and Brett from the get go was incredibly awkward and uncomfortable with a lot of small talk,” Liberty said.

“Scotty, at dinner, kept trying to get us to talk but none of us bit at that.”

Realising that he wasn’t going to get the party started over dinner, Scotty retired for the night leaving the warring factions to have a pyjama party by the fire.

Kristy was the one to finally break the ice and address “the elephant in the room”.

She assured the sisters that she did not have a problem with them, saying that a lot of the tension was because they had misinterpreted her jokes and sarcasm.

“I am not in the business of offending people so a lot of it was tongue in cheek,” she explained. “But we do apologise if it has offended you.”

Yep, the classic way of saying sorry without taking ownership for bad behaviour.

Eliza wasn’t buying it.

“All I needed to hear is we don’t know when we are hurting people and we are sorry you were victims of that but instead it was that’s just our dark humour, take us or leave us,” she said.

Brett and Kristy then said that if Eliza had spoken up for herself earlier, they would have been best friends.

She was stunned.

“My god. How awful that she’s seeing the worst side of me — because I didn’t love that — and she resonated with it. It’s kind of grim,” Eliza said of the couple’s reaction to the confrontation.

Kristy then dropped a bombshell, telling the sisters that Leah had told them the sisters had issued an ultimatum, urging them to choose between themselves and Kristy.

“Leah isn’t the person I thought she was. She says and does two different things,” Kristy also offered of her bestie turned mortal enemy.

Brett said Leah simply wanted to clear her name and was worried about being portrayed as a villain. And look, that may well be true but at least she’s acknowledged that it was bad behaviour.

The sisters saw through it all but just wanted to move forward knowing people’s true characters.

“There was a lot of throwing Leah under the bus,” Eliza shrugged. “Leah said this. Leah did that. Leah is two different people. So, there were things like that I could tell Kristy wanted to create a rift. But we walked away from all of that because we have had enough of that tit for tat.”

Following Leah’s intervention on Kristy’s mean girl antics, relations between the former besties had been frosty.

“She doesn’t look at me. She doesn’t talk to me. I don’t exist to her,” Leah said, arms folded.

She was feeling more optimistic about the job at hand. This week, everyone is creating two kids’ bedrooms.

As a mum of three, Leah felt this was hers to lose. She’s designing the two rooms in honour of her eldest kids, decorating them with themes they would like. The girl’s room would feature loud colours and a stage to perform on, while the boy’s room had a rock-climbing wall.

On the other side of the spectrum was Steph and Gian, who were totally out of their depth.

Steph admitted she still had “PTSD” from the first time she did a kids’ room in week one and was pilloried by the judges for being bland and whimsy free.

Realising that she had no idea about what kids like, Steph started polling anyone she came across for some insight (including the reformed Leah, who appeared to have made good on her vow to be nicer to offer some helpful titbits).

Surveying some actual children, Steph and Gian were stunned when one little boy told them emphatically that kids do not want beige.

“They said no beige and I said, fair enough. I will use earthy tones,” Steph said. Way to go wild.

Eliza and Liberty decided to make their rooms gender neutral to ensure broader buyer appeal. But they are still having some fun with the spaces by incorporating some jungle-themed wallpaper.

Interestingly, their foes, Kristy and Brett were also hearing jungle drums and are using similar paper on their budget bedrooms, styled almost entirely with Block bucks.

There was, of course, a challenge to tackle as well. The teams are being asked to reinvigorate Ronald McDonald House’s garden and barbecue area with the help of 2022 contestants Jenny and Dylan. Yes, they were doing something nice for charity, but there was also $15,000 up for grabs.

Dividing into two teams, was awkward given recent tensions. On one side was Kyle, Leslie, Dylan, Jenny, Steph and Gian and on the other was the warring trio of teams.

Leah and Ash’s first pick in the team draw was the sisters, making it abundantly clear to Kristy and Brett where their allegiances now lay. Rubbing salt in their wounds was the fact they were the last team picked.

The perk for Kyle and Leslie’s team was, should they win, they’d only have to split their winnings between two teams, rather than a three-way as Leah and Ash’s crew would have to do.

Kristy and Brett were still smarting from being last pick when they were called upon to attend Ash’s birthday dinner. Kristy was in no mood to celebrate but Brett convinced her to go along.

“No, I didn’t want to go to dinner. I figured what’s the point? It’s like working after hours. That’s what it feels like to me.”

Honestly, they needn’t have bothered. They spent the meal sitting in stony silence then cleared off as soon as the cake hit the table.
