South Carroll girls basketball’s stingy defense leads the way in 52-33 win against Liberty – beragampengetahuan – Beragampengetahuan

Ryan Hutchinson had a clear vision of what he wanted in his team to be as he prepared for his debut season as South Carroll girls basketball coach.

“We will play with a defense-first mentality and make it difficult for opponents to score to be successful,” he said before the season.

Hutchinson’s Cavaliers featured a host of young players that needed to mature quickly and find their offensive stride. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers relied on a stingy defense to lead the way and make things a little easier offensively in the process.

Thursday night against Liberty it all came together.

Carried by an impressive team defensive performance, the Cavaliers smothered the Lions en route to a 52-33 road win.

“I thought we played an excellent game on the defensive side of the ball,” Hutchinson said. “We were able to create some turnovers and get out in transition and get some easy baskets all game.”

Liberty’s offense was out of sync and sloppy seemingly from the opening tip, turning over the ball over several times in the first quarter.

A lot of the turnovers were caused by the pressure South Carroll put on the Lions. Many possessions ended with Liberty coach Barry Green frustrated after seeing one of his girls becoming impatient and throwing the ball away into the waiting arms of a player in a Black jersey.

“Our coach always tells us it’s a defensive game that turns offensive,” Harley McKee said. “So, we always try and push on defense.”

With the turnovers opening up opportunities for the Cavaliers, they were able to use their athleticism and run the floor, setting up several girls for easy, uncontested shots.

McKee, who finished with 14 points, showcased why she is one of the best shooters in the county.
The sophomore made the Lions pay as she hit two 3-pointers in the first half, proving she is one of the last people opponents should leave open and uncontested on the court.

“She’s an excellent shooter. She’s a good ball handler and has extremely high basketball IQ,” Hutchinson said. “She’s able to help out in many different facets of the game.”

Coming out of the halftime break up seven, a big third quarter allowed the Cavaliers to put the game away. Still applying pressure on the defensive end, Charlotte Harrington found herself on the receiving end of several outlet passes as she finished at the rim confident and strong during what was a big quarter for the junior. Harrington (13 points) joined McKee and freshman Jenna Todd (game-high 15 points) as Cavaliers finishing in double figures scoring.
