Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who is fighting a war with Ukraine that has killed hundreds of thousands of troops and thousands of civilians, has said the hundreds of people killed in Gaza at the Al Ahil Arab Hospital is a catastrophe.

“The tragedy that happened there is a terrible event,” he said.

“Hundreds of dead and hundreds of wounded are of course a catastrophe.

“I really hope this will be a signal that we need to end this conflict as soon as possible.

“In any case, we need to focus on the possibility of starting some contacts and negotiations.”

Earlier, Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said it had been heartbreaking to see Russia attacking Ukrainian hospitals, as she called for the facts to be established about what had caused the Gaza incident.

Putin was speaking in Beijing alongside China’s President Xi Jinping, with whom he agreed a “no-limits partnership” on the eve of his own and ongoing war with Ukraine.

The Israel-Hamas conflict started on October 7 when Hamas terrorists broke through the border fence separating Gaza and Israel and murdered more than one thousand civilians, including babies and children.

Israel has been responding with air strikes and says it is eliminating Hamas leaders who reside in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Defence Force has categorically denied responsibility for the explosion at the hospital and said that Islamic Jihad caused it when a misfired rocket landed back in the Gaza Strip instead of making it to Israel.

US President Joe Biden appeared to endorse that assessment after arriving in Tel Aviv.
