Westminster girls basketball defeats Century, 58-46 – Beragampengetahuan

As many gathered to honor the seven seniors playing their last regular season home game as Century Knights, Carroll County’s top two scorers — Century’s Harli Hamlett and Westminster’s Maddy Gassman — were expected to put on a show in search of another hard-earned county victory.
Instead, Westminster’s Aracely Adames stole the show.
Adames proved that she’s capable of making teams pay if too much attention is focused on one player. She hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 23 points as the Owls pulled away and defeated Century, 58-46, Tuesday night.
“My teammates told me to keep shooting, so I let it fly.” she said.
With the Owls running the offense through Gassman, the county’s second-leading scorer (17.1 points per game), coach David Urban was forced to turn to other options after Gassman’s first couple of shots failed to find their mark.
With his team depleted with several players out sick and another suffering an injury during pregame warmups, Adames’ breakout performance was just what Urban and the Owls needed.
“When we needed others to step up, she was right here for us,” he said. “Aracely came in and did very well.”
Adames developed a hot hand quickly. She made her first three shots and scored all of Westminster’s first-quarter points. Her hot start continued into the second quarter as the Owls opened up a double-digit lead and took control of the game heading into halftime.
Gassman opened the second half on the right track, hitting a deep 3-pointer as the Owls worked through the puzzle that was Century’s zone defense. Hamlet, the county’s leading scorer at 17.7 points per game, also got going. She got the ball inside and made some tough baskets as she drove into multiple defenders with no fear.
Every time the Knights made a run, Adames quickly put a stop to any comeback attempt with a 3-pointer that left many in the crowd frustrated.
“Who’s got No. 5?” one fan shouted after her sixth 3-pointer of the night went in toward the end of the third quarter.
The scoring got contagious as the Owls pounded away inside to close out the game. The fourth quarter became Julianna Lesher’s time to shine. Gassman was saddled with foul trouble and eventually fouled out of the game. As a result, Lesher became the inside presence Urban needed to close out the game. She scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Owls pulled away with one final game-clinching run.
With a limited rotation and no projection as to when his Owls will be at full strength again, Urban isn’t phased as he knows Tuesday’s win was just as much of a show of mental excellence. They fought through adversity for another key win on the road toward what they hope will end in a county championship.
“We played up in Pennsylvania for some games and we’ve had some tough county games that have prepared us,” he said. “We have a forged in fire mentality and when we needed others to step up, they stepped up.”
